Workshop 1: audiotranscription: ›AI in qualitative research: prompts, software solutions and methodological approaches‹
22.09.2025, 13.00-16.00
Lecture, demonstration and discussion with Thorsten Dresing and Thorsten Pehl
In view of the great interest, the originally planned workshop will be extended to a lecture with demonstrations and discussion. The event will offer an in-depth exploration of AI in qualitative research, combined with practical demonstrations and time for your questions and discussion.
The lecture is dedicated to the current developments and challenges arising from the use of AI, in particular Large Language Models (LLMs), for qualitative data analysis. Starting from the possibilities of automatic transcription and the limitations of simple AI applications, the focus is on the need for methodologically sound integration strategies.
We will present different approaches on how AI can be integrated into established qualitative methods. One focus is on the presentation of the concept of hybrid interpretation with multiple LLMs developed by the speakers. This approach aims to enable an intersubjectively comprehensible and methodologically reflected use of AI as a heuristic tool in the interpretation process. In addition, other methodological concepts such as query-based analysis (Morgan), conversational analysis with AI (Friese), the AI-supported approach to the documentary method (Schäffer/Lieder) and qualitative content analysis (Kuckartz/Rädiker) are presented and categorised.
We also provide information on data protection (GDPR) and the possibilities of using LLMs locally and thus in compliance with data protection regulations for qualitative analyses. We will present findings from our current practice.
